Day 6-Labadee, Haiti

Today we visited the last port on our cruise. This time we visited the Royal Caribbean owned Labadee. Unlike other stops Labadee works as an extension of the ship. This means all the workers are employed by the cruise line and you can charge everything to your account. It’s mainly a big beach break with some activities you can book. They have added a lot to the island since the last time Amy and I visited there (probably >10 years). Wanting to have something planned other than playing on the beach we purchased all day passes for the water slide and the coaster ride.

The gangways didn’t open until 10am so we didn’t have to get up really early. However, Amy and Hannah decided to try the main dining room for breakfast which meant they needed an early-ish start for the sit down dining experience. Ethan and I did the usual Windjammer. Amy found out after showing up that deck 3 is buffet style in the main dining room and deck 4 is an a la carte more sit down dining experience. She was expecting the a la carte style but since they were already on deck 3, they decided to try the buffet style. I was told it was OK but next time they will do the deck 4 option. They also found out that at 9am on this port day that the Promenade is completely dead.

Ethan and I had a hard time finding a seat for breakfast at the Windjammer so his plan of sitting by the window to watch us dock into Labadee was not going to happen. After we finished we headed out to the sports deck to watch our ship pull into port. Then we decided to kill a little time by shooting baskets for a bit.

We walked off the ship shortly after the gangway opened at 10am. Our plan was to first find the Dragon’s Tail Coaster on the island. It was located on Adrenaline Beach on the far side of the island. After checking in and getting the All Day Pass bands for the coaster, we rented a locker for our backpack and shoes. The lockers are $8 for all day access by use of a RFID bracelet. My pictures today might not be the best quality since my phone stayed in a waterproof pouch all day and I took pictures through it.

The line for the coaster was not too long this early in the day, however, they informed us they were having technical difficulties (seems to be a common theme for us this cruise). There was a problem with the light signaling system to keep the toboggans spaced apart from each other. What this means is that instead of sending someone every minute onto the track, they have to send one and wait until they return before sending the next. At this rate it would take about 45min before it would be our turn. We waited but others decided to go get a refund. The toboggan can seat 2 and since you need to be 12 or older to ride solo, we just purchased 2 tickets and the kids would just ride with us. You get pulled to the top of the hill like a roller coaster then you control your downhill decent speed by how much you apply the brake. Amy and Ethan went first and Hannah and I were next. Ethan was very nervous but ended up loving it and wanting to go faster next time. That next time will have to wait because the line took too long for us to do once and we had a lot more to see and do.

Since we had another all day option booked, the water slide, we headed there next to see what that is like. It is located at Columbus Cove beach which is also home to water toys like inflatables in the aqua park. The slide was not fast but at least the wait to go down it was short. The sand at this beach was great for playing in and the water was great for wading in.

By this point, it was about time to eat lunch. At Labadee, Royal Caribbean brings the buffet food off of the ship and provides lunch at the beach. There’s not a whole lot of choices but it’s enough to last us until we get back to the ship.

When we finished eating, the kids wanted to hit the beach to play in the sand and the waves. We looked around and found a beach that had some waves but it was a little rocky in the water. That didn’t stop the kids from having a good time. Also the long zip line ran over the water by us. We really would have wanted to do the zip line but it’s pretty pricey for one trip down.

We figured if we wanted to do the coaster again, we better get back there and stand in line. Our wait was probably 45min and this time we switched riding partners and turned up our speed by request of the kids. This coaster was fun but would have been much better if the system was working correctly allowing less wait. Also a smaller ship would have had less people on the island making the line shorter.

For the rest of the time in Labadee, the kids wanted to play on the nice beach by the water slide (and go on the slide some too).

On our way back to the ship for the all aboard time of 4:30pm we walked by the locals trying to sell souvenirs. As I remembered, these locals are some of the pushiest sellers you will encounter at ports. As you walk to and from the beaches you constantly hear them calling to you to get you to look. Also when we did go to the stands to look, they kept trying to put items into your hand then tell you that you really like it and you’re going to buy it. At least it made my kids second guess wanting to get a souvenir.

As soon as we were back on the ship, we went straight to the Aqua Theatre for the Splish Splash comedy dive show. The kids really liked all the stunts. They did do the high dive during this show.

Now off to dinner after getting cleaned up. For appetizers, Amy and Ethan had the pork tacos. The Chicken Parmigiana was popular choice for everyone except me. Ethan also had the Tiger Shrimps and Amy the Tagliatelle. I went with the Rack of Lamb and the fish of the day which was tilapia. The new desserts tried tonight was Tres Leches by Hannah and Amy and Cherries Jubilee by myself.

We had a busy and late night of activities which is why I’m getting this post up more than a day late since my evening typing was not available. First the kids both did karaoke (Ethan was excited to join Hannah this time). Next was a visit to the arcade to use up Ethan’s credits we put on his card before we sailed. There’s actually 3 different arcades on the ship but just one big one. And, as we found out, their credits system is not without their flaws. The math didn’t add up as we tried to keep track of how much credits were left with credits disappearing from his account. We used them all up and Ethan picked out his prizes from the vending machine.

There was a late night comedy show that was kid friendly so we all stayed up for that. Ethan was falling out of his seat laughing so it was a good thing we went. We let the kids head back to their room alone after the show to put themselves to bed because Amy and I wanted to see the adults only Quest game show that started at 11pm. After watching everyone make fools of themselves at the Quest, we headed back to the room and found the kids fast asleep.

Tomorrow is the last day of the cruise. Being a sea day, we will try and squeeze in the last few activities before we go home.
